Recently I read in the newspaper about a new trend among companies to simplify their name. This is called “branding.” Kentucky Fried Chicken is now “KFC;” British Petroleum is “BP;” National Public Radio is “NPR” and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) is now calling itself “the Y.”
Why are they doing this? One vice president said, “It’s a way of being warmer, more genuine (and) more welcoming.” Branding also helps raise the visibility of your organization according to one expert.
Though I don’t usually like fads, I like the idea of calling ourselves “Community.” I like it because it is who we are; we’re community, a family of faith, the body of Christ.
The dictionary defines community as “a unified body of individuals” and “a group of people with a common characteristic or religious interests.”
We are a community of Christians. We are a group of people who believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. We are sinners saved by the blood of Jesus Christ our Savior.
We are a community of Baptists. Our expression of faith and worship is historically Baptist. We believe strongly that all persons have an equal right to direct access to God. We believe that all believers have a right to equal privileges in the church. We believe that to be responsible the soul must be free. We believe in the freedom of believers to interpret the Bible as led by the Holy Spirit. And we believe in the separation of church and state.
WE are a community of priests. According to First Peter 2:9, “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood… a people belonging to God.” All believers are priests and servants to one another. The church belongs to the laity, not to any ecclesiastical power.
We are a community of witnesses. Our task is to obey the great commission to go into the city and state and world and make disciples, baptize them, and teach them.
We read in Genesis 28:3 this blessing for our community: “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and increase your numbers until you become a community.”
The next time you tell someone about our church, remember to say, “We’re Community.”

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel” (Phil. 1:3-5). How can I say thanks for the past six years of being your pastor and shepherd? I truly count it all as joy. You continue to bless my life and ministry. What a privilege and joy it is to serve along side of you in this work. I appreciate all you have done and are doing. I look forward to working together as we follow the Lord in reaching this community for Christ and building his kingdom for his glory. Thank you for calling me as your pastor. I treasure each day I am here.
